The Poohsticks Bridge

Pooh BridgeThe Milne's lived beside a small stream that eventually runs into the River Medway.  Their old Farmhouse lay a short distance from a wooden bridge that they needed to cross to reach the Ashdown Forest. It was on one of these visits that he and his Nanny played the game of "Poohsticks".  Christopher was not at all sure whether he invented the game or if it was his father, A.A.Milne.  He recalls that his father was always coming up with new ideas for Pooh stories and that he himself was always thinking of ideas for new games.  So between them Poohsticks was invented.
"And that was the beginning of the game called Poohsticks, which Pooh invented, and which he and his friends used to play on the edge of the Forest.  But they played with sticks instead of fir-cones, because they were easier to mark."

If we want to be introduced to the stream that runs under the Poohsticks Bridge all we need to do is read chapter 6 of The House at Pooh Corner in which Pooh invents a new game and Eeyore joins in.

"By the time it came to the edge of the Forest the stream had grown up, so that it was almost a river, and, being grown up, it did not run and jump and sparkle along as it used to do when it was younger, but moved more slowly.  For it knew now where it was going, and it said to itself, "There is no hurry.  We shall get there some day."  But all the little streams higher up the Forest went this way and that, quickly, eagerly, having so much to find out before it was too late."

And no visit to the world famous bridge would be complete without playing the game,

"Rule 10.  People who play Poohsticks are usually nice people.  When you arrive at the bridge and there are other people already playing Poohsticks - don't worry.  They may ask you to join in but remember, sooner or later, they will run out of sticks."
